Really though, a plan so grand that Jinshi didn’t even try to refuse. Also to be practical for once, there’s actually no one in the palace, except you know, Jinshi, who could come even remotely closer to the kind of beauties those two foreign envoys were. Only Iron can cut iron, after all lol. Not sure where did Jinshi take those dancing lessons, but yeah, that was breathtaking, in the literal sense. Hilarious how one of them got so worked up lol.

That being that btw, I always like how the transition never feels odd despite switching from a lighthearted first half to a serious second half in this series. All the mysteries which they’ve been building up since the start of this season would start getting some sort of answer in the next couple or so episodes. We again met Shin after all, and yeah, Maomao’s at clinic as well. Though like ever, she and Jinshi coincidentally meeting each other, anywhere they go has become kind of a running gag xD

Leaning about more places within the palace, that place is certainly huge.
Seems like the visitors have a hidden agenda and it might get complicated.

Jinshi "fine I'll do it myself." Bro's single handedly the prettiest guy and woman. The envoys pride was shattered. They are indeed pretty but not even top 5 in this show. Seems like Maomao might get in trouble for making medicines.

Went in prepared to crack up at Jinshi cosplaying as Granny in her prime and ended up being way too captivated to laugh. The assist from those moths (and Xiaolan and Shisui by proxy) was massive.

Also, Maomao sending Xiaolan off to school was freaking adorable.

The envoys are here! Ah so that’s the blondes from the op! They are definitely otherworldly beauties and have an air of exoticism to them. The one, Ayla I think? Is definitely sus though. Just what is she up to..

They say they’re western, but their escorts appear to wear Turkish clothing.. Maomao also referenced Dianna who was a Roman goddess. I wonder if they’re supposed to be Byzantine/eastern Roman Empire.

Oh my goodness THE MOON FAIRY DANCE was so good!!! Jinshi truly is the prettiest boy lol. That would’ve definitely been enough to topple even the strongest of nations. Good thing they kept it under wraps and only the envoys saw the performance! Jinshi is such a spoiled baby for wanting Maomao to dry his hair after lol I love them.

Uh oh, so Maomao technically been illegally making medicine this whole time.. of course right as Jinshi warns her to not let anyone find out.. someone finds out 😂 next episode should be fun.

Certainly the envoys have beauty and are fuller-bodied woman, and putting the "fuller" across.

Not wanting to dismiss the dramatic cliffhanger. The Emperor knows about Maomao and her detective work, does even matter if she making medicine?

Jinshi has entered his drag queen era. Seriously though, he looked SO GOOD, it was absolutely gorgeous and he did a great job, the moths really accentuated the whole scene- I couldn’t stop laughing the whole time though (*≧∀≦*) that was really really good!
The crystal pavilion ladies still being scared of Maomao was really funny too, it was a good scene, but I liked how it was introduced to show the lady in waiting who wore no perfume. That can’t have been for no reason.
I love how Maomao gets snatched up like a cat when she’s found places she’s not supposed to be (≧∀≦)
And her concern for Jinshi knowing that he must have had his “assets” removed just before the ban 😂 I love those two so much.

I know it's early at the moment, but I can't help but notice...what's with the significantly lower ep rating?? This episode was quite fine at the worst. I wonder if it's because of how the tone shift was from the first half to the second half when such a functionality has always been a mainstay within this series, and if that's the case, idk why look at it as an issue now of all timings. Or was it cause that one scene with Maomao pointing to the night sky felt underwhelming? I don't think it was meant to be THE big highlight unless if Jinshi's Moon Dance wasn't satisfying enough (it was hella nice, even).
Or was it the way the episode was cut off in separate segments? Perhaps, but I'm not sure how else they'd extend the Moon Dance segment any further without making it feel too stretched out.

I love this show, but my biggest gripe has been the lack of status MaoMao enjoys despite her accomplishments. You’d think Jinshi would pull some strings to give her a special role, and thus avoid 90% of the complications arising from her being a mere attendant girl. I’m sure there’s some inner politics that make that tough, but MaoMao is at least special enough to be able to communicate to the emperor directly (as she’s done multiple times now when he’s been with concubine Gyokuyou) and she’s the daughter of one of the most prominent officials in the palace. It should be a no brainer to give her some special status to help in her work.

Damn, my heterosexuality just took a hit-Jinshi is the ultimate waifu 😂 A beauty that could topple entire nations! She certainly has her mother's genes. They really did a beaut job with the editing and the moths-a perfect way to take those pretentious twins down a peg or two. But it looks like one of the twins isn't going to let it go so easily.

It's fascinating to see the level of influence the concubines have and the diefrence of how the emperor treats each one. Gyokuyou may be the concubine with the least political clout, but she's clearly the emperor's favorite. (Well, aside from Ah Duo.) And poor Lishu.... Her history is very murky. Her parents were absolute scum for offering her to the previous emperor. At least the current one isn't just as disgusting, and won't do anything to her.

And Maomaopworried that Jinshi doesn't have a birdie and wants to give her one 🤣🤣. This woman is too much. Also, is that older woman going to blackmail Maomao because she knows about his medicine skills?

@Namu12 She says that in the manga? Well, both Diana and Selene are deities (in Roman and Greek mythology, respectively) connected to the moon, but I wonder why they'd change the name and what does Maomao actually say in the LN.

It seems they're hinting at Central Asia with Ayla and Aylin given their appearance, probably Persian or Turkish descent. So maybe they went with Diana due to the name stemming from Proto-Indo-European, thus indirectly being related to Old Persian.

I have no idea what Ayla spoke, but someone said above that it was Turkish.

Jinsh looked nice as usual, but the fact that Mao Mao or others admire his beauty and remind about it literally in every episode is getting a bit tiring. I have the impression that everyone there would be happy if Jinshi was a girl because they treat him a bit like a beautiful doll that is fun to dress up and look at lol
The episodes are ok, but for now there's nothing really engaging.

Jinshi as the moon fairy captivated all our hearts...

What a plan that was by Maomao to impress the envoys, and it worked to perfection. Jinshi's dance was beautiful, and it reminded me a bit of Maomao's dance from Season 1's finale. This anime sure knows how to depict the art of dancing very well. The second half was interesting in that Maomao was not technically allowed to make medicine, yet Jinshi and Gaoshun were just looking the other way and letting her do it anyway. Certainly, the scented oil mystery still looms large, and it still remains as something to keep at the back of our minds.

If there's one critique I have, it would be that the transition from such a beautiful dance, to a more serious tone in the second half really watered down the impact of the second half of the episode for me. Perhaps the moon dance should have been saved to end off an episode rather than to start an episode. Nonetheless, still a really solid episode.

Yes, at least in the version I have. She says Selene and explains its goddess name. I would say I got chills when reading this. While in the anime name Diana did not give me the same feeling.
But maybe it is also because in manga they stop at Maomao eyes/face when she spoke it and here we barely saw her at this scene.

As a Turkish person let me transcribe what she said.

Ne oldu böyle? (What was that?!?)
Nereye kayboldu? (Where did she go?)
Peki o da kim? (Who was that?)

By the way her Turkish pronunciation is very bad I almost couldn't get what she was saying and sentences are wrongly created.

LOL.

@Marinate1016 The girls' names are turkish. From the looks of the hairstyles of chinese characters, it seems like we are in Ming Dynasty era. In the previous episode they mentioned that this western nation controls the trade control point of the west which was constantinople. They spoke turkish in the episode (pronouncation was so bad i almost didn't understand anything and had to listen multiple times.) Men wear fez which was an ottoman thing in 19th century (yeah it wasn't a thing in ming era but i think they used them to make it not look so accurate to real life).

Yea but the outfits aren’t really a tell in this series because Maomao’s outfit and those of the courtesans and ladies in eating are all from different eras. This is an ancient Chinese society that’s a hodgepodge of different eras. The ottomans wouldn’t really know about Dianna, but the byzantines would and of course there were still Turkic speaking peoples in that empire. Idk tho. It’s probably just a mix of a ton of different historical eras.

The Turkish language thing is a good point tho because that became the language after the fall of the byzantines

@RomanRonin She has a special role.
Remember that she is no longer a member of the rear palace, she is a member of Jinshi's personal assistants.
Jinshi also tried to help her even further by setting her to get a certification (can't remember on what), but she failed the exam.
Pretty she is the first one that denies her relation with her father, so no path here.

And most importantly of all of that, she is in the rear palace to covertly help Gyokyou with her pregnancy, which must be kept secret for the time giving, and thus for outsider's eyes she is better being identified as a mere servant.

Damn I knew Jinshi was best girl. What looks what moves.

Who taught Jinshi to dance like that and Maomao is right about toppling nations. Moths of all thing came handy. Baba was annoyed by those which ironically made her legend. Shisui is really helpful.

Props to the emperor for banning euenchs. Always hilarious to see Maomao make fun of Jinshi's "missing" treasure.

As soon as they mention Maomao to keep it secret someone find out, classic. Despite in secret she does have emperor or the very least Jinhsi support so I doubt that lady can do anything against her.

I was worried the whole episode would be a build up to the dance so I'm glad that part was over within about ten minutes of the episode. The envoys seemed satisfied and should trade with the emperor more. Maomao and Jinshi did do a good job holding their end of the bargain. Maomao kind of going back over everything so far, who's been poisoned and who's done the poisoning and such. Lots of stuff has happened over the past year in the timeline. Her thinking of this because the potential incense poisoning is still going on. Unclear who brought in all these specific fragrances which could combine into something deadly. Maomao escorting that sick girl back to the clinic. Its always astounding seeing Maomao discover parts of the rear palace she's never seen. This place full of more middle aged ladies working in the clinic and cleaning the laundry. The one which Maomao talked to seemed to know what she was doing and could sniff out Maomao potential too. Maomao herself needs to figure out where this next poisoning is coming from. Who could be behind things this time and will Maomao figure it out in time.

They certainly did not disappoint with this stellar episode...or should I saw, lunar?

Shisui being the bug-loving happy-go-lucky girl she is puts a smile on my face.

Maomao is so pretty in her "Moon Fairy" outfit, I can't even...

Jinshi's "moon fairy" dance was something else as well. Who knew he could dance so well .

The two look-a-like Special Envoys were quite beautiful. I'm guessing they're from the late Byzantine Empire or Ottoman Empire because of all the clues shown:
- The two bodyguards look obviously Turkish.
- They're named "Ayla" and "Aylin", common Turkish girl's names. Incidentally, the more reserved "Aylin" envoy having a name meaning "moon halo"...quite fitting for the episode theme.
- And finally Ayla speaking Turkish at the end of the dance.

Maomao said "Diana" here instead of "Selene" in the manga, for whatever reason.

Since they didn't specify the language spoken in the manga, I assumed the envoys were ethnically Greek, as they understood Maomao saying "Selene"...although that might just be that they know multiple languages being diplomats. They might still be, as Greece (nowadays Hellenic Republic), which was part of the Ottoman empire at the time. But now that they thew in this curve ball with changing it to "Diana", they might be equally Roman as well... Only the author would know for certain.

Maybe some of the mythology legends of Jinshi's "moon goddess" will be written about him one day about this particular night. Since Diana is a goddess associated with the moon.
Perhaps Maomao's comment at the start of the episode when she mentioned how exaggerations and retelling across distances might be how myths and fables came to be, hinted at this possibility.

Speaking of the Mediterranean origins, since Maomao supposedly learned that word from her adopted father, maybe it was Greece, Rome, or Turkey that he traveled to as it was previously mentioned Luomen studied medicine abroad. They were pretty vague on that, although this offers some more insight on which direction he may have traveled to in the past prior to the story.

It was interesting to see some of the foreign political maneuvering by the envoys trying to curry favor, like the fact that they sent not one, but two (super beautiful voluptuous ones at that) envoys aiming to woo the emperor and the younger prince brother. Sometimes I forget that IRL, it was common for royalty to send their daughters of high social standing for political marriages to other members of royalty or high members of aristocracy abroad and overseas. Consort Gyokuyou's princess daughter would likely end up just like in the envoy's shoes, with talks of political marriages to faraway lands, just like Consort Gyokuyou herself had once been before committing to the emperor.

Those moths were quite cute. According to the internet, they were "Chinese Luna Moths" (Actias Sinensis) or Golden Moon Moths...very apt, sticking to the moon theme. Looks like they got the sexes right, as it's the big pale green ones that were female, and the goldish-green would been the male ones. They apparently don't glow as you might expect from other insects like fireflies. The full moon's moonlight most likely reflected off of their dust-like scales, combined with being next to a body of water for Jinshi to dive into so he can "disappear"—it may have been humid and slightly misty as well, adding to the glowing effect they see.

Maomao should give Jinshi a break, thinking to herself that he should dry his own hair. Because not many people are capable of pulling off what he just did. Only Jinshi with his well-trained fit body could have swam through the huge pond wearing those heavy soaked layers, which would have been difficult or even life-threatening if it had been anyone else, with the chance of drowning.

It's funnier when you remember that all the moths flying around were males drawn to the pheromones of a female moth rubbed on Jinshi's outfit.

With the convoy's pride shattered, we see her in her room...but what was in the box? What was in the box!?
